Q Scaffolding: Brainstorming of Research Topic. Proposal for Semester ***Review assignment folder, and handouts with guidelines*** Due: At the end of Week 1-2, Sunday by midnight—For this scaffolding you may have two weeks to submit. Students will write a proposal to identify the subject /issue/ topic they will be working with for the semester. This will be submitted to, approved, and graded by the instructor. Refer to the textbook: Everyone's an Author: Chapter 17—Making a Proposal/ “Here’s What I Recommend” Throughout the semester you will focus on one topic/issue: Here are the criteria: It must be a 21st-century social issue that allows you to advocate and must make an impact on a community--Becoming a Global Citizen. The topic may be local, national, or international (global). The issue/ topic that you select must lend itself to expanding to further research, both primary and secondary research and support your research questions. For this discussion post your topic ideas, as an extension of the discussion that you included in the Introductions. Answer in this format: (MLA or APA style acceptable) Write a short summary of why you feel this is a good topic to advocate. (2-3 sentences) Provide a potential thesis statement. Include the big topic: (example: terrorism); Narrowed topic: (domestic terrorism in the U.S.) Then answer the following: Who is the topic for? What is the issue? When did the issue begin? Where is the issue most fluid? Why should people care? How is the issue or problem going to be resolved? Things to think about as you move beyond the brainstorming session: A precise description of the problem; A clear and compelling solution to the problem; Evidence that your solution will address the problem; Acknowledgement of other possible solutions; A statement of what your proposal will accomplish. (Adapted from Everyone’s an Author, pp. 374) Review the YouTube video for how to write a Research Proposal under Web Resources, as well as the Purdue OWL hand out, and Review the Research Questions handout. The topic you select is the topic you will research and analyze for the 16 weeks of the course semester. You may make adjust the issue/topic as needed throughout the semester. Make sure it is connected to "Becoming a Global Citizen." It must show that it is a topic you can be proactive in and contribute to society or a community as a whole. If you have not done so, review the video from the founder of “Becoming a Global Citizen.” The founder provides the mission statement or the organization. This video is located under Introductions. ***Note: This is the start of the course curriculum module layout: Module 1: Community Engagement Proposal (100 points) Community Engagement Proposal: Students will explore issues and concerns in their communities (home, place of worship, civic, work, school) and will identify a problem connected with the community that they wish to study. Students will explain how their own interests, goals, and values align with the organization or agency’s mission. This paper will take the form of a proposal or memo. Remember to refer to Everyone's an Author: Chapter 17—Making a Proposal/ “Here’s What I Recommend” As a reminder, make sure to complete the "Scaffolding: Brainstorming of Research Topic" discussion post by Sunday. The purpose of the Scaffolding: Brainstorming of Research Topic is for me to review it, offer feedback, and approve the topic. It is important that this is submitted in a timely manner.
